Her research interests and expertise are in the areas of HPC systems infrastructure, computer clusters, grids, cloud computing, intelligent agents, smart grids, and embedded systems. She was awarded the status of Chartered Engineer and Fellowship of Higher Education Academy and is a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and the British Computer Society (BCS).

She joined the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield in 2007 as a Senior Lecturer in Embedded Systems. She lectures in parallel computer architectures, computer clusters and grid, embedded system, digital signal processing and virtual instrumentation. She is a Course Leader for MSc Embedded Systems Engineering and MSc Electronic and Communication Engineering, and a postgraduate tutor in the School of Computing and Engineering.

In 2010 she became a Subject Leader for Electronic and Electrical Engineering. She also co-founded the HPC Research Group which aims to promote the links between high performance computer users, developers and researchers across various research groups and institutes at the University of Huddersfield, and throughout the UK and internationally. Under her leadership, the HPC Research Group has established links with the UK National e-Infrastructure Service (NES) as an affiliate member, and was instrumental in establishing collaboration between the University of Huddersfield and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Daresbury Laboratory. She is currently working with 3M Business and Innovation Centre at the University of Huddersfield helping industry to access HPC research and design facilities.

Dr Violeta Holmes obtained her degree in Electronics and Physics from the ETF Electronic and Technical Physics Faculty, University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia. She worked as a Systems Engineer in Smederevo Steel Mill Yugoslavia, gaining industrial experience in computer control of hot and cold steel rolling mills. She continued her postgraduate studies in the UK and completed an MSc in Control Engineering from Bradford University, followed by a PhD from the University of Huddersfield in the application of artificial intelligence in distributed computer control. Her career in Higher Education, as a researcher and lecturer in computing and engineering, spans over 20 years.

Dr Holmes took part as a mentee in the Athena Project, established in 1999 by the UK higher education funding councils, supporting women in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET). She participated in The North West Universities Mentoring Scheme for women in SET(MENWU) as a mentor in 2004/2005. As a Chartered Engineer and a member of the IET and BCS she continues to support the advancement and promotion of the careers of women in science, engineering and technology in Higher Education and research.
